Is Prom Better Single or Taken?

The Benefits of Going to Prom as a Couple and by Yourself

When most people think of prom, they see it as a fun party or dance that you are supposed to attend with a partner, however that is not entirely true. Everyone knows the stereotypes of people who go to prom solo: they’re lonely, they’re weird, or they don’t have friends, but don’t let this stop you. Some people believe prom can be more fun if you go by yourself, but some say it is always enjoyable with a plus one. So which is better?

Micah Anderson, a senior attending Fort Dorchester High Schools prom with his girlfriend Raven Washington, says “going to prom with a date makes it a lot of fun. Yeah, it might be a little stressful to get all the pictures and suits or dresses planned out, but it is pretty cool to have someone with you the whole time, you can’t really get lonely or bored that way.”

Going to prom by yourself might sound weird at first, but here are some of the benefits: you don’t have to worry about coordinating colors of outfits, or a time and place to take pictures. There is less potential for drama, and you don’t have to worry about your date wondering off to someone else and flirting with them. The best part is, you can do whatever you want to do on your schedule whenever you want. For example, you don’t have to ask where your date would want to eat before or whether or not they want to dance, you can just hang out with your friends or by yourself, and nothing is wrong with that.

Logan Koch, a student attending Fort Dorchester High School’s prom without a date had this to say, “It was actually a lot more fun than I expected, going with a group of my friends was way less stressful because we all sort of just did what we wanted. I had an amazing night and there was not a moment where I was upset because I didn’t have a date.”

So all in all, going to prom with or without a date is fun and enjoyable. Do not let going without a date or worrying about the stress of going with a date stop you from going to your school dance. Both sides have their benefits, so the answer to whether going single or taken is better, is your preference and is up to you.
